I have been teaching for 23 years and I can tell you with certainty that martial arts training is very beneficial for those with ADD or Autism.
Let' s start with ADD. Though I was never officially diagnosed, I used to show all the signs of ADD and still show some today. I realize that now it is ADHD but I personally disagree. I never had a hyperactive component. I digress. Over the last 23 years, i have trained many people will ADD/ADHD. As a child I just had to learn to concentrate and learn to focus. When you bring your ADD/ADHD child to martial arts class, they are expected to focus and pay attention if they plan to learn, grow, and advance. At times, I will have students (all students) stand still and look forward in silence and stillness. Students who come to class 3-4 times a week for one hour receive micro sessions demanding their focus and concentrated attention. Over time, these micro-sessions become more bearable as their ability to focus increases.
Though I do not struggle with Autisim, I have trained many students that do. Autistic students are very intelligent and thrive in martial arts. They no longer need to struggle balancing multiple peoples roles, their role, and social interaction like they do in traditional team sports. Most of the time they are doing solo drills or a set drill with one other person. Martial arts also helps them learn better social skills as they interact with multiple people one on one for short periods of time under specific guidelines. Over time, they form natural friendships with their training partners and socialize before class, after class, and even in other social events.
If you have a student struggling with ADD/ADHD or one that is high functioning Autistic and want to try martial arts in Shawnee, Ok., we would love for you to visit us.
Be Blessed,
Coach Chance
